Black Horses

Video Clip: Black Horses from Joya Mooi

This track and accompanying video are inspired by the painting Two African Men by Rembrandt, which is on display at the Museum Mauritshuis.

What makes this painting particularly remarkable is that it depicts Black people as the main characters, which was rare in 17th century’s European art. At that time, there was a small African community living in Amsterdam at Waterlooplein, near Rembrandt’s atelier. As I wrote the song, I wanted to pay homage to the lives of these Black people, full of love, triumphs, and more. I hope that this music can inspire others to learn more about this Dutch history.
